After a while, a message appears asking for a username and password when accessing network files. It is not a big problem but the users tend to be annoyed by this and feel that it is delaying their jobs. In fact, the delay is significant because the computer needs to be restarted to regain network access. We are using a Windows 2000 server as our primarily domain controller with no backup domain controller. Our file server is a Windows XP Service Pack 3 machine. This means that it is only limited to 10 concurrent users accessing the file server. I have already set the DNS entries to point to the domain controller which is also a DNS server. It could be configured as a DHCP server but I used the internet router&#8217;s DHCP server for giving out IP addresses to the workstation. With this current setup, the problem still persists. I have now added a WINS Server IP address to the DHCP parameter to try if this could do the trick.
