I was asked by my colleague to look into a problem he encountered when opening a word document with Chinese characters in its filename. I opened it using Word 2003 and had no difficulty seeing its contents. I tried another computer using Word 2000 and an error appeared stating that it cannot find the file. I looked around and found an article at Microsoft’s site stating that the problem is known. It does not state the solution to the problem, but introduced a remedy. You can open the file by opening the file from Word 2000. Opening the file through windows explorer will always result in an error message. Apparently, there’s no other way but to open Word 2000 first.
